What is WiFi marketing?

Definition

WiFi marketing is the use of guest WiFi sign-ins to capture first-party data, build visitor profiles and trigger marketing from your CRM, such as welcome emails, post-visit surveys and loyalty enrolment. It is standard in hospitality, retail and large venues, where the guest network is the main digital touchpoint on site.

WiFi marketing explained

The process starts before a guest signs in. Devices send probe requests that show footfall and dwell time. When a guest joins the network, the captive portal asks for an email address or social login and a marketing opt-in, creating a consented contact record tied to a real visit.

That record flows to a CRM or email platform, and each visit adds to it: how often the guest comes, when, to which venue and for how long. Rules then act on the data automatically. A first visit triggers a welcome email, a third visit a loyalty offer, a long absence a win-back message, and a visit that ended an hour ago a short survey.

Closed-loop attribution is the payoff. Because the same guest WiFi network records when a contacted guest returns, a venue can see whether a campaign brought people back in, not only whether they opened an email. It all rests on consent: marketing opt-ins must be separate from network access and logged under GDPR, and a clear value exchange earns more of them.
