For most data teams, the BI platform is home. It is where the numbers are trusted, where the dashboards live, and where decisions actually get made. So the real question for any new data source is a practical one: how easily can I get it into Power BI, Tableau or Looker, and keep it fresh?
Getting external data into a BI stack has traditionally meant building and maintaining a pipeline: pulling from an API, handling rate limits, transforming and loading the results, and fixing it when something changes upstream. It works, but it is a project, and projects need owners. The alternative that has quietly become the standard is connecting BI tools straight to a database.
Why a direct database connection helps
Purple Datastore gives you a secure, read-only copy of your Purple data in standard PostgreSQL. That matters because your BI tools already know how to talk to PostgreSQL. You use the same native connector you would for any other database, point it at your Datastore, and the data you are working with is live rather than a snapshot from last week's export. There is no bespoke integration to build, and nothing to babysit.
What is worth building first
Once the connection is in place, a few things tend to earn their keep quickly. A footfall view across your estate, so you can compare sites at a glance. Dwell-time patterns, to understand how people actually use each space. Review and survey scores over time, to catch a location drifting before it becomes a problem. Repeat-visit cohorts, to see loyalty rather than just volume.
The bigger unlock is blending. Because it is your own environment, you can bring your POS, CRM or loyalty data in alongside your Purple data and model across all of it. Comparing spend against dwell time, or conversion against repeat visits, is the kind of analysis that is hard to do when the data lives in separate silos.
The practical considerations
Two things usually matter to whoever owns the data. First, control. Your copy is single-tenant, so it is yours alone, and access is governed from the Purple portal you already use, with whitelisting and role-based controls over who can see sensitive fields. You can give an agency access to footfall while keeping visitor details locked down. Second, safety. Because the copy is read-only, your analysts and their tools can explore freely without any risk of changing source data.
Beyond the dashboard
A good dashboard answers the same question well, over and over. When you need to step outside that - to look at one venue, one week, or one customer - you can query the data directly or simply ask it a question in plain language, right alongside the views your team relies on.
Datastore is open to new and existing Purple customers. If connecting your BI tools directly to your venue data would save your team a standing job, speak to an expert to get started .
