University and school WiFi guides

Networks for students, staff and visitors across a campus, from eduroam to halls of residence.

In short

Campus WiFi has to serve students, staff, visitors and thousands of personal devices on one estate. Universities usually run eduroam with 802.1X for students and staff, certificate onboarding through SCEP for personal devices, per-student keys in halls of residence, and a captive portal for visitors. Schools add content filtering and safeguarding.

Frequently asked questions

What is eduroam?

eduroam is the roaming WiFi service for research and education. Students and staff sign in with their home institution account and connect at any participating campus, authenticated through 802.1X and RADIUS.

How should halls of residence WiFi work?

Each student gets their own key or network bubble, so their devices, printers and games consoles see each other and nobody else. Purple does this with iPSK.

How do universities onboard thousands of personal devices?

With self-service certificate onboarding. Students sign in once, SCEP issues a certificate, and the device connects through 802.1X from then on.

Which universities use Purple?

The University of Sheffield, the University of Leeds, University of the Arts London and Eastern Michigan University.
