What is the best captive portal software?

It depends on what the portal has to do after the sign-in. All 17 platforms compared here run a branded captive portal. They differ on email and SMS marketing, footfall analytics, staff WiFi, multi-tenant iPSK, ISO 27001 certification and whether there is a free plan. The table scores each one on those eight criteria.

How we compared them

Purple wrote this page, and Purple is on it. So it restates facts rather than scores. Each competitor entry is taken from our head-to-head comparison pages, which cite the vendor's own website and pricing pages and were last reviewed between July and August 2026. Where a comparison does not cover a criterion, the table says "Not compared" rather than guessing. Vendors change their products; check the linked sources before you buy.

Branded captive portal

The splash page itself: branding, login options and what data it asks for. Every platform here has one, so this is the floor, not the differentiator.

Email and SMS marketing

Whether the platform can act on a sign-in itself, or exports the data for another tool to use.

Footfall and dwell analytics

Visits, dwell time and repeat visits per site, rather than session logs.

Staff WiFi and 802.1X

Passwordless WPA2/3-Enterprise for employees on the same platform, or a second vendor for the staff network.

Multi-tenant and iPSK

Per-resident or per-tenant private networks for BTR, student accommodation and coworking.

Runs on existing hardware

Whether it overlays the access points you already own, or comes with a hardware and installation contract.

ISO 27001 certification

Certified, "aligned", or not published. The question procurement will ask.

Free plan

A permanent free tier, a time-limited trial, or quote-only.

How to choose

  • Start with the networks you run, not the portal. If staff, residents or IoT devices share the estate with guests, check the staff WiFi and iPSK columns first. A guest-only portal means a second vendor for the rest.
  • Decide who uses the data. If marketing wants campaigns from sign-ins, a platform that exports to other tools means building that integration yourself.
  • Check your access points. Overlay software keeps your hardware. A managed install or a single-vendor platform does not.
  • Ask procurement early. ISO 27001 certification, SOC 2 and GDPR are different things, and "aligned with" is not "certified".
  • Test on one site. A free tier lets a proof-of-concept run as long as the evaluation needs. A 14 or 30-day trial sets the timetable for you.

Captive portal software: questions

What is the best captive portal software?

It depends on what the portal has to do after the sign-in. All 17 platforms compared here run a branded captive portal. They differ on email and SMS marketing, footfall analytics, staff WiFi, multi-tenant iPSK, ISO 27001 certification and whether there is a free plan. The table scores each one on those eight criteria.

How were these platforms chosen?

They are the captive portal vendors Purple has published a head-to-head comparison for, 16 of them plus Purple. Vendors whose product is cloud RADIUS or network access control rather than a guest portal, such as SecureW2, Portnox and JumpCloud, are compared on the cloud RADIUS providers page instead.

Which captive portal software has a free plan?

Purple has a permanently free Connect tier, suited to a single venue. Among the others, GoZone publishes a free tier. The rest offer a time-limited trial or are quote-only, according to their own pricing pages at the time of review.

Which captive portal software also runs staff WiFi?

Purple runs passwordless WPA2/3-Enterprise staff WiFi on the same platform as the guest portal. Cloudi-Fi and IronWiFi also offer cloud RADIUS and 802.1X. Cloud4Wi, EthoStream and Nonius cover it only in part, and the rest do not include it.

Which captive portal platforms are ISO 27001 certified?

Purple is ISO 27001 certified, alongside GDPR, CCPA, Cyber Essentials and B Corp. None of the other comparisons records an ISO 27001 certificate: several vendors publish SOC 2 or GDPR positions instead, and IronWiFi states ISO 27001 alignment rather than certification.

Do I need new access points for captive portal software?

Usually not. Most of these platforms overlay the access points you already run. The exceptions are EthoStream and Nonius, which design and install the network as a bundled service, and Cisco Spaces, which runs on Cisco hardware only.
