WiFi for museums and heritage sites

Turn free admission into members, donors and return visits

Most of the people who walk through your doors never book a ticket, so they never reach your CRM. Purple's visitor WiFi gives them a reason to say hello, in their own language, then puts your next exhibition, your membership offer and your cafe on the screen they are already holding. Staff, volunteers and gallery devices stay on their own secure networks, on the access points you already own.

  • Consented visitor data for your CRM
  • Sign-in in each visitor's own language
  • xPSK for tills, scanners and interactives

The gap

Thousands of people walk your galleries. Your CRM knows a handful of them.

Free entry, school groups, tourists and walk-ins mean most visitors leave no trace. Your membership team, your development team and your exhibitions team all need to reach the same people, and the free WiFi they connect to tells you nothing about them. That gap shows up in four places.

A typical museum today

  • Free-entry visitors who arrive, connect and leave without a name or an email
  • Membership and donations asked for on a leaflet at the desk, once
  • International visitors greeted with a sign-in page they cannot read
  • Tills, ticket scanners and gallery interactives sharing one password with the public network

With Purple

  • Every visitor who connects signs in with consent, so you know who was in the building
  • The sign-in moment asks whether they are a member, and sends those who are not straight to joining
  • Sign-in follows the language on each visitor's phone, and the welcome page shows what is on today
  • Every device gets its own key and VLAN, and staff and volunteers sign in with their own account
One platform, four plays

Every visitor, and everything that keeps the doors open

Visitor data, membership and giving, exhibitions and trading, and a secure back-of-house network, run from one dashboard by the marketing, development and operations teams you already have.

Visitors

Find out who is in your galleries, and why they came

Most museum visitors never book anything, so the WiFi sign-in is often the only moment they tell you who they are. Purple turns it into consented first-party data: who visited, how often they return and what they care about. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County uses Purple guest WiFi to build visitor profiles and personalize what it recommends next.

  • A branded sign-in with social, email or one-click login and CCPA/CPRA consent recorded with a full audit trail
  • Sign-in shown in the language set on each visitor's phone, for tourists from anywhere
  • Short visitor surveys as people connect, as Glasgow Life runs to hear from tourists and residents
  • Visitor numbers, dwell time and repeat visits in one dashboard for your audience team

Members and donors

Grow membership from the people already in the building

Someone who has just spent two hours in your galleries is the best membership prospect you will ever have. Purple asks the question while the visit is still fresh, sends non-members straight to your joining page and passes every consented record to the CRM your development team already works in.

  • Ask whether visitors are members and send the answer to the right next step
  • Consented records synced to Salesforce, HubSpot and more through 400+ data connectors
  • Separate opt-ins for exhibition news, membership and giving, so every list stays clean
  • Returning visitors recognized, so the third visit can carry a different ask from the first

Exhibitions, shop and cafe

Put your programme on the screen they are already holding

Your next exhibition, late opening or family workshop is usually promoted to people who are not in the building. Purple's welcome page puts it in front of the people who are, and points them to the shop and the cafe on the way out. When LW Theaters added merchandise, afternoon tea and food and drink to its WiFi welcome page, 518 visitors clicked through in the opening week of Hercules.

  • A welcome page with links to what is on, exhibitions, shop, cafe and membership
  • Pages scheduled to switch on and off with exhibition dates, so nobody has to remember
  • Different content for different spaces, from the main hall to the temporary exhibition
  • Follow-up emails after the visit for your next exhibition, to visitors who opted in

Staff, volunteers and devices

Keep the back of house off the visitor network

Curators, visitor services teams and volunteers all need to get online, alongside tills, ticket scanners, gallery interactives, AV and environmental sensors. Purple gives people their own sign-in and gives each device its own key and VLAN, so a password shared at the front desk cannot reach a till.

  • Staff sign in with Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace or Okta, and leavers lose access automatically
  • Time-limited keys for volunteers and contractors, with no device management needed
  • A private key for every till, scanner, interactive and sensor, revocable one at a time
  • DNS content filtering on the visitor network, for school groups and families

Museum WiFi questions, answered

What marketing, membership and IT teams ask us most

Do we need to replace our access points?

No. Purple runs on the access points you already own, including Cisco Meraki, HPE Aruba, Ruckus, Juniper Mist, Ubiquiti UniFi, Cambium, Extreme and Fortinet. There is nothing to rip out or replace.

How do we collect visitor data without putting people off?

Visitors choose how to sign in, with email, social or one-click login, and choose what they opt in to. Consent is recorded with a full audit trail under CCPA/CPRA, so every record your team receives is one you can use.

Can the WiFi help us grow membership and donations?

Yes. The sign-in can ask whether a visitor is already a member and send non-members to your joining page, and consented records flow to your CRM through 400+ data connectors.

Can we show visitors what is on today?

Yes. Your welcome page can link to current exhibitions, events, the shop and the cafe, and pages can be scheduled to change with your programme so nobody has to switch them over by hand.

What about international visitors?

The sign-in follows the language set on each visitor's phone, so tourists see your welcome in their own language.

Is the visitor network safe for school groups and families?

DNS content filtering is available on the visitor network, and staff, tills, scanners and gallery interactives each sit on their own network, never alongside the public.

Where is our data held?

Purple is ISO 27001 certified, CCPA/CPRA compliant, has RADIUS regions in the US, EU and UK and has had zero data breaches since 2012.
