What is guest WiFi and how does it work?

Guest WiFi is a separate wireless network venues provide to visitors, isolated from the staff and payment networks. A captive portal handles sign-in (social login, email, SMS, voucher, or SSO), the access point places the device onto a guest-only VLAN, and optional analytics track footfall, dwell, and repeat visits. Purple delivers all of this as a cloud overlay on top of your existing Cisco, Aruba, Ruckus, Juniper Mist, Meraki, or Ubiquiti access points.

How do you set up a guest WiFi network?

Setting up a secure guest WiFi network involves four key steps: 1. Create a dedicated VLAN on your network switch to isolate guest traffic from internal networks. 2. Configure a new SSID (wireless network name) on your access points and assign it to the guest VLAN. 3. Set up a captive portal (splash page) to manage visitor sign-in, marketing consent, and bandwidth limits. 4. Implement a cloud overlay platform like Purple to handle authentication (RADIUS), compliance logging, and CRM integrations without replacing your existing Cisco, Aruba, Meraki, or Ubiquiti hardware.

Is guest WiFi secure? What encryption does Purple use?

Yes — when deployed properly. Purple supports WPA2-Enterprise and WPA3-Enterprise on managed SSIDs, OpenRoaming / Passpoint for automatic secure onboarding on compatible devices, and a captive portal on an open-but-monitored SSID as the fallback path. Guest traffic is segmented from staff and payment networks at the VLAN level, and per-session keys prevent devices from decrypting each other.

Do I need a RADIUS server for guest WiFi?

Only if you want per-user authentication (WPA2/3-Enterprise, 802.1X) or per-device keys (iPSK). Basic captive-portal guest WiFi does not require RADIUS. If you need RADIUS without running one, Purple offers it as a cloud service — see the RADIUS-as-a-Service page for the full product.

What data does Purple capture at guest sign-in?

Whatever you configure — and no more. Typical fields are email, name, and a marketing opt-in; you can also capture phone, date of birth, postcode, venue preferences, or custom fields. Consent is recorded per sign-up for GDPR and CCPA. You control the data; Purple is the processor, not the owner.

How is guest WiFi different from staff WiFi?

Guest WiFi is built for sign-up and experience — branded portals, marketing consent, analytics, and low-friction onboarding. Staff WiFi is built for authentication and security — per-user credentials via WPA2/3-Enterprise or iPSK, identity-provider integration, and per-device revocation. Can I integrate guest WiFi with my CRM or marketing automation?

Yes. Purple ships native connectors for HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and dozens more, plus webhook support for anything else. Sign-up events, marketing consent, and presence signals can all trigger downstream automation — welcome emails, loyalty enrolment, re-engagement campaigns.

How long does it take to deploy Purple guest WiFi?

Hours for a single venue, weeks for a multi-site rollout. Because Purple runs as a cloud overlay, you do not replace access points — you change the RADIUS and walled-garden settings on the existing hardware and design the portal in the dashboard. Enterprise deployments (hundreds of venues, custom integrations) typically use Purple professional services for the cutover.

What compliance certifications does Purple guest WiFi hold?
