Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) OpenRoaming is a global roaming federation that links identity providers (such as device manufacturers, mobile carriers, and cloud identity platforms) with access network providers (commercial venues). When a visitor walks into an OpenRoaming-enabled venue, their device automatically authenticates using Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint (Hotspot 2.0 / 802.11u) and WPA3-Enterprise 802.1X encryption over secure RADSEC tunnels. This delivers instant, zero-touch internet access without searching for SSIDs or completing web forms.

Traditional captive portals require visitors to select an unencrypted SSID, wait for a browser prompt, and submit web forms or social logins. OpenRoaming authenticates devices automatically at the radio layer using public key infrastructure (PKI) and 802.1X certificates. This eliminates user friction, eliminates captive portal dropouts, and provides over-the-air WPA3-Enterprise encryption that protects against packet sniffing and rogue access points.

OpenRoaming operates natively on standard enterprise wireless hardware from Cisco Catalyst, Cisco Meraki, HPE Aruba Networking, Ruckus Wireless, Juniper Mist, and Fortinet. Any access point supporting Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint Release 2 or Release 3 (802.11u ANQP) can broadcast the OpenRoaming Roaming Consortium Organization Identifier (RCOI 5A-03-BA-00-00) and forward authentication requests to Purple Cloud RADIUS.

Yes. Open public WiFi networks broadcast unencrypted radio signals susceptible to eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks. OpenRoaming enforces WPA3-Enterprise or WPA2-Enterprise with AES-256 over-the-air encryption. Each client device negotiates unique pairwise session keys with the access point, ensuring privacy across shared physical spaces.

Purple provides free OpenRoaming enablement through its Connect tier, eliminating software licensing fees for venues that join the global federated network. Yes. OpenRoaming co-exists on the same wireless infrastructure as branded captive portals and corporate SSIDs. Visitors with pre-installed Passpoint profiles (such as Apple iOS, Google Android, Samsung, and carrier SIM devices) connect automatically via 802.1X, while first-time or legacy devices without Passpoint profiles are seamlessly routed to a branded Purple captive portal.
