Why channel planning matters

Access points on the same channel within earshot of each other share airtime and back off constantly, which feels like slow WiFi even when signal is strong. A clean reuse plan keeps neighbouring APs on different non-overlapping channels. In 2.4 GHz that means sticking to 1, 6, and 11. In 5 GHz you get far more room, especially once DFS channels are in play.

Planning tips

  • Prefer 5 GHz with 20 or 40 MHz width in dense deployments; wider channels mean fewer of them.
  • Keep APs that reuse a channel as physically far apart as possible.
  • Confirm DFS behaviour with your controller before relying on those channels.
